What is Energy Work?
Energy Work (or Energy Healing) is a form of Complementary Medicine that focuses on re-balancing and alleviating blockages in the energy (auric) field. Energy blockages are cleared by introducing a concentrated flow of pure healing energetic vibrations. Energy blockages may or may not be apparent on the physical realm. By working on this level of energy vibrations, deep healing can come from within a person, with results being seen on the physical, emotional and spiritual level. Any type of energy healing is channeled through the healer into your body. This process can be done in person with laying-on-of-hands (usually lying on a massage table), over a distance (remember energy has no time or space limitations), through sound, breath, infused herbs, infused crystals or any other "tool" that transmits vibrations. It is healing and re-balancing on the transcendental level.
What is Reiki?
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words:
"Rei" which means "spiritual or sacred" and
"Ki" which means "life force energy".
So, Reiki literally translates to "spiritually guided life force energy."
Reiki is a healing support system.
A Reiki session feels like "a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you." It can feel like "Blissful Joy" or "Loving Kindness". It can bring up past traumas in order for them to be released. It can put someone to sleep. It can fill you up with renewed energy. Reiki flows through the whole person including the body, emotions, mind and spirit. Reiki creates holistic beneficial effects that include a feeling of relaxation, feelings of peace, a renewed sense of security, less dis-ease (dis-ease causes disease) and an overall feeling of well-being.
Reiki is a complimentary therapy and not a substitution for conventional medicine. Reiki does not interfere with conventional medicine and is a safe alternative therapy to incorporate into any health regimen to increase the benefits of any treatment.
How does the body take in this energy?
The Universal Energy Field is everywhere. We also have our own individual energy field (in your physical body and around your body in your "aura"). Your Energy Field can be accessed through your energy points, or "chakras". These are small, vortex like cones located all over the body. There are seven main chakras which are responsible for much of our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual functioning. If certain chakras are not functioning properly, most often due to energy blockages, then we may exhibit symptoms of imbalance or dis-ease, on the physical, emotional or spiritual level. An "attunement" allows a person to become open to these subtle forces and pass this energy on to others.
Your individual energy field is connected to the Universal Energy Field through the healer. Energy is everywhere. Energy is what everything is made of. Quantum Physics tells us that even though we can't see it, even your coffee table is just a mass of energy in which those observable particles are actually waves of energy. I am energy. You are energy. Everything is made of energy.
What are the "Chakras"?

(Grounding Point)
According to Mind Body Green "the seven chakras are the centers in our bodies in which energy flows through.
Blocked energy in our seven chakras can often lead to illness, so it's important to understand what each chakra represents and what we can do to keep this energy flowing freely. Here's a quick summary:

What is an attunement?
To learn Reiki, an "attunement" is passed from a Reiki Master to the student. The attunement opens the individual's energy field to the Universal Energy field and enables the student to become a conduit for the Universal Life Force Energy. This allows the new student to pass the Reiki energy on to others.
There are many different forms of Reiki. Usui Reiki is a Japanese healing art that was re-founded (NOTE: Some people say he founded it while others say he channeled it) by Mikao Usui in the late 1800's in Japan. Mikao Usui was a devout Buddhist who, in his intense desire to understand and work with methods of medicine and healing, was able to tap into the Universal Life Force Energy. "Reiki" is a Japanese word for this concept. Reiki's initial stages can be learned by anyone regardless of their personal philosophy and/or spiritual belief system.
The attunement, or initiation, of Reiki energy creates a "re-awakening", a re-opening of the stronger healing potential that lies within us all. In Reiki, the healing energy is allowed to flow into the body of the practitioner, and then the practitioner is able to act as a conduit through which this energy can be passed on to others. It is the innate healing touch.
Many forms of Reiki have been founded and channeled by healers. There have been reports of Reiki helping virtually every known illness and human malady. Reiki creates an overall beneficial effect for anyone channeling the energy or receiving the energy.
Reiki works well in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote overall recovery and wellbeing.
Is Reiki a religious practice?
Energy therapy is a compliment to any religion or spiritual practice you choose to follow. Reiki allows your energetic blockages to be cleared and re-balances the flow of energy, promoting physical and emotional well being. Various religions and spiritual practices acknowledge the "Universal Life Force energy" that flows in and around us all. Spirit, chi, prana, God, Goddess, the larger "I", Buddha, spark of life, all-spark, breath of life, nature, mother earth, father sky...these are all words to describe the energies that flow within our bodies.
What is Reiki Lineage?
Reiki is said to be as old as human kind. Throughout human history there have been those who were known for their healing touch such as Buddha, Mother Theresa, Jesus, etc. This is something that we know little about and consider a gift. Lineage is all about keeping the knowledge pure and true to it's nature — the original teachings. In any spiritual or mystic practice, it is essential that the teaching at each generation be held true to the original teachings. This does not restrict the practitioner or the student. It only restricts the teacher and only in the way the knowledge is passed on. Each recipient of the knowledge must make it his or her own, but each time one becomes a Teacher there must be a return to the original material. If this does not happen, then after only a very few generations the knowledge becomes corrupted and lost. This is also the rationale for the secrecy in most traditions — to protect the knowledge from being misunderstood or misused, rather than maintaining some sort of elitism. The particular form of this gift that we know of as the Usui System of Reiki Healing has its origins (or channeling) from Mikao Usui. As a teacher, Usui was challenged by his students about his unwavering faith in the reality of a healing force. It became his personal quest to be able to source this power as a help to mankind. Through years of scholarship, studying sacred scriptures of Christian and Buddhist origins and their healing power, as well as living a life of personal prayer and meditation, Mikao Usui experienced a spiritual awakening or spiritual transmission of this system of healing. What we know has been passed on to us through a series of lineage bearers who have been guardians and preservers of the integrity of the practice. Chujiro Hayashi, a successor of Mikao Usui, practiced and taught in a clinical setting in Tokyo, Japan. It was to this clinic that a young Japanese-American, Hawayo Takata, was brought in 1932. Reiki healed her of the illnesses that had brought her to Japan. As a result of her healing she stayed in Japan for a year of training and practice in the Usui System of Reiki Healing. In 1937, Hawayo Takata became a Reiki Master in Usui Shiki Ryoho, a person empowered to teach Reiki to others. In that same year and for the first time, the Usui System of Reiki Healing was taught outside of Japan by Takata's teacher, Chujiro Hayashi. Mrs. Takata was chosen as Dr. Hayashi's successor and brought Reiki to the West. Before her death in 1980, Mrs. Takata chose as her successor her granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto. Phyllis has spent the last 20 years sharing her understanding of the Usui System of Reiki with students and masters throughout the world.
